The Other Dinosaur Picture

The Good Dinosaur isn't the only feature about big reptiles being made.

South Korea's Dream Search C&C will co-produce the sequel to the successful local film Speckles the Tarbosaurus, with China's Hengsheng Group, Dream Search C&C announced on Friday. This marks yet another collaboration project between the two Asian countries, which have grown closer than ever in recent years.

Speckles the Tarbosaurus, a.k.a. The Dino King or Jumbagi in Korean, is a 3D animated feature that attracted over 1 million admissions in 2012, becoming the second-most-successful local animation of all time. The film, handled by CJ Entertainment, was also sold to 37 territories and yielded additional revenue through IPTV and DVD sales. ...

I rooted around on the interwebs, and found a reported box office gross of $8,000,000 for the original. Maybe Speckles made a bunch more than that when all the cash streams got tallied, but eight million bucks appears to be what's out there speeding down the information highway.

The picture got a release in the U.S. as The Dino King, but I don't recall seeing it on the marquee of my neighborhood AMC.

But dinosaur movies have done brisk business across the globe for decades. The Lost World, King Kong, Jurassic Parks I, II, III, Disney's Dinosaur, and of course the 452 Land Before Times that have been made for home video since the first one was released back during the Reagan administration.

Small boys never tire of the ancient herb and carnivores that roamed the earth 60 million years ago, so the movie biz will likely keep pumping out movies that have them as main characters.

The funny thing is: when I was little the reason I love Jurassic Park was because Sam Neill is such a bad ass in that movie. The dinosaurs are great, but they're not what I cared about. To me, it was like Indiana Jones with dinosaurs.

I guess that explains why I didn't get into Transformers. No characters to relate to.

Sam Neill is also good in Jurassic Park 3, where he's dragged into the action as the reluctant hero ... with NO desire to go back to the island.

I like that one a lot.

He's good in it, but the script didn't really give him much of an arc or anything. It's basically just a standard monster movie. Which, if you're looking to not think too hard and just enjoy some action scenes, it's worth a watch. JP2 was still trying to be a social commentary like the first one, but failed to be interesting while doing it.
