The World of Box Office

Two animated titles are high in the list, and of course lots of live-action titles thick with VFX.

Weekend Foreign Box Office -- (World Totals)

Hunger Games -- $67,000,000 -- ($480,092,805)

Penguins of Madagascar -- $36,000,000 -- ($99,000,000)

Interstellar -- $44,400,000 -- ($542,290,000)

Big Hero 6 -- $4,800,000 -- ($224,109,000)

Paddington -- $8,500,000 -- ($8,500,000)

Asterix: Mansion of the Gods -- $5,000,000 -- (5,000,000)

The trades have an opinion regarding the just-released Penguins.

... “Penguins of Madagascar” disappointed in its stateside debut, but has generated respectable returns abroad. It has been open in China for nearly a month, but broadened its footprint to more than 40 territories last weekend, earning $36 million in the process. The “Madagascar” spinoff has made just shy of $100 million globally. ...

Before we determine just how "disappointing" PoM is in the US. of A., perhaps we should hang around for its second weekend, yes? Because (let's remember) that How To Train Your Dragon 2 was, as far as Deadline, Variety, Bloomberg and The Wrap were concerned, was also disappointing. Even though its global take way outstripped Dragon Uno.

Then again, using the Koch Calculator, Penguins will probably land in the lower hundred-million quadrant throughout the U.S. and Canada. But I think we should wait and see what happens through the holiday season before we make any final judgments.

Just saying.
