Trained at Cal Arts, director-animator-writer Bruce Smith got his start animating for Bill Melendez Productions on a Garfield television special ...

"I was lucky," Bruce says. "I never spent time doing the in-betweener thing. I went straight to being an animator."

Mr. Smith came into the cartoon business between semesters at Cal Arts, doing what he thought would be a "summer job." He's still working steadily more than a quarter-century later.

Part II of this conversation will go up tomorrow. Our interview with Disney animator Ruben Aquino can be found here.

I really enjoyed this interview with Bruce Smith, Steve. I remember when Bruce and so many other talented young guys came to our wacky studio in the early eighties. Almost everyone of our talented staff went on to "rule the industry." I'm proud I was there to watch it happen.

Looking forward to hearing more.

Can't wait to see how many people think Bruce has died along with Ruben Aquino.

Great interview. Bruce is really funny and informative guy, and it's always fun to hear about the animation industry circa the 80s and early 90s. I'm very excited for part 2!

We received complaints about our first interview being up in one hour-long chunk, so we are -- henceforth -- breaking them into 20-30 minute segments.

(I plan to be doing a lot of these, if you're wondering.)

Hey Anonymous, stop spamming that link. Nobody cares as long as animators have jobs, which Jeffrey is giving them.

By the way, did you spam this place with links when Pixar announced that 3 of their next 4 movies would be sequels? Didn't think so.

At least Jeffrey pays his staff well. Can't say the same for John Lasseter. Who's the animator's best friend now?
