United We Stand

The story behind this Pluto watercolor is almost as good as the art itself ... About ten years ago, George Warren, a retired member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Lodge 1426 in Burbank, brought this to us. George, who had to have been almost ninety when we met him, had worked for Lockheed for many years. In the summer of 1941, like many other union members in the Valley, he came out to picket in support of the striking cartoonists at Disney. Right out on the picket line, an anonymous Disney artist did this watercolor, captioned "United We Stand -- A Disney Striker/41," and gave it to George in thanks for his support. George wanted us to have the original but we couldn't bear to let him part with it, so we had a good color Xerox made of it.
Pluto is, of course, © by the Walt Disney Company.
